Dhaka University authorities have issued show-cause notices to 403 banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders involved in attacks on students during unrest on campus on July 14 in 2024.
The notices were released on Tuesday, giving the accused seven working days to respond, failing which the university may take unilateral disciplinary action.
For those whose student status has ended, the university may also recommend the cancellation of their academic certificates.
The notice, signed by Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed and issued through the university’s Public Relations Office, follows the findings of the investigation committee formed to probe illegal and violent incidents that occurred on campus between July 15 and August 5, 2024.
Initially, 128 students were temporarily suspended based on the committee’s preliminary report. In its second meeting, the committee identified a total of 403 students linked to the incidents.
The notice instructs the accused to submit written explanations within seven working days to justify why they should not face permanent expulsion from the university.
Otherwise, disciplinary measures will be taken according to university regulations.
Speaking to media, Dhaka University Chhatra Dal general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon said that all perpetrators responsible for the attacks should face justice and that they would review the final list of identified BCL members.
Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said that recommendations will be made to cancel certificates of those whose student status has ended, with the final decision to be taken by the university syndicate.
The show-cause notices are effective from Tuesday.
