Bangladesh Bank has directed all Mobile Financial Service (MFS) providers to immediately suspend any financial transactions linked to online gambling.
The central bank issued letters to 13 MFS operators following instructions from Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division, urging them to take strict action against the illegal practice.
According to the directive, MFS providers must:
1. Identify and compile a list of accounts suspected of involvement in gambling-related transactions.
2. Form dedicated task forces to monitor and prevent illicit financial flows.
3. Introduce AI-based systems capable of detecting and flagging suspicious transactions in real time.
4. Establish public reporting mechanisms; including a complaint portal and helpline, for citizens to report gambling-related activities.
Bangladesh Bank has also called a meeting with seven leading MFS operators on November 6 to review the situation.
The meeting will assess the effectiveness of existing monitoring systems, evaluate the readiness of MFS companies to implement new control measures and determine the level of support required to strengthen the fight against online gambling.
