A Dhaka court has rejected the bail plea of Bargis Shabnam Barsha, a student accused in the murder of Jagannath University student and JCD leader Jobaid Hossain.
Barsha’s lawyer, Mahmudul Hasan Shahid, argued that she was not involved in the killing and had been arrested “without cause” on October 21.
He said no specific allegations were mentioned in the case statement and described Barsha as a “young and innocent student”.
Rejecting the plea on Tuesday, Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhter agreed with the prosecution, which opposed bail on grounds that Barsha had confessed to the crime and might flee if released.
According to police, Barsha had been in a relationship with Mahir Rahman while also developing a romantic involvement with her tutor, Jobaid.
Enraged, Mahir allegedly planned the murder with his friend Fardeen Ahmed Aylan. Barsha is accused of sharing Jobaid’s schedule and urging Mahir to kill him.
All three accused, Barsha, Mahir and Aylan, confessed before a court on October 21 and were sent to jail.
Jobaid’s body was found with multiple stab wounds on the staircase of a house in Dhaka’s Bangshal area on October 19. His brother Enayet Hossain Soikot later filed the murder case.
