Akhtar demands to declare next JS as Constitutional Reform Council

National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain alleged on Monday that a faction within the government is attempting to transform itself into a "consensus commission," undermining the spirit of the reform process initiated through national consensus.

Speaking at a press  conference at the party's temporary office in Bangla Motor, Dhaka, he warned that such manoeuvres could jeopardize the credibility and stability of the forthcoming national election.

Akhtar Hossain accused authorities of engaging in "a political game of snake and ladder" with the reform proposals. "The commission submitted its recommendations after extensive dialogue with all political parties. The government was supposed to issue orders based on those recommendations. But instead, they held a press conference asking for another week of discussions, effectively rolling back the progress we had achieved. We had reached 96, and it has been reduced to three by cutting by the snake," he said, highlighting frustrations within reformist circles.

He asserted that the ongoing delay in implementing the commission's recommendations has deepened political uncertainty in the country. "The current political situation in Bangladesh is only intensifying the crisis," he cautioned, urging the government to act responsibly to restore public confidence in the electoral and reform processes.

Calling for immediate executive action, Akhtar Hossain urged authorities to issue an order to implement the July Charter without further delay. He also proposed that the next parliament be declared a Constitutional Reform Council with legislative authority, ensuring that "the will of the people, expressed through the referendum, is automatically implemented."
