Jatiya Nagorik Party's (NCP) Chief Coordinator for North Region, Sarjis Alam, said on Monday that his party is preparing to field candidates in all 300 parliamentary constituencies in the upcoming national election, while simultaneously working to strengthen its grassroots network.
Speaking at a press conference in Mymensingh on Monday (November 3) evening, following interviews with NCP conveners and member secretaries from four northern districts, Alam said the party’s organizational work is progressing rapidly.
“If we can form convening committees in every ward by December, we will be able to nominate strong candidates in all 300 constituencies,” he said, stressing that grassroots consolidation is the party’s current priority.
Criticizing the Awami League and the Jatiya Party, Alam said neither has the moral or political right to participate in the next election. “They claim that an election without Awami League or Jatiya Party cannot be fair. But the fact is, Jatiya Party was created and nurtured by Awami League itself. Those responsible for the killings during the 2024 uprising, the BDR mutiny, the Shapla massacre, and countless enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings cannot take part in a democratic process,” he declared.
Commenting on possible electoral alliances, the NCP leader said, “If we can reach consensus with any party on key national and public interest issues, an alliance is possible. Discussions are ongoing, but no final decision has been made yet.”
Alam also expressed frustration with the current Election Commission, accusing it of arbitrariness over the party’s election symbol. “The commission initially refused to give us our preferred Shapla (water lily) symbol and instead allotted Shapla Kali (water lily bud). We are contesting under this symbol, but if such biased behavior continues, it will erode public trust in the commission,” he warned.
