The Election Commission (EC) has officially restored the political registration of the Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA).
Agazette notification, issued from the Election Commission, confirmed the matter on Sunday.
Sources said that JAGPA was first registered as a political party on November 20, 2008.Its registration, however, was abruptly canceled on January 28, 2021, effectively barring it from participating in electoral politics. This decision was later challenged in court.
On March 19, the High Court ruled that the cancellation of JAGPA’s registration was illegal, paving the way for its restoration. In compliance with the court’s verdict, the EC issued a formal notification—signed by Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed—reinstating the party’s official status.
Welcoming the development, JAGPA President Barrister Tasmiya Pradhan said, “Although Sheikh Hasina’s government revoked our registration, it could not stop our political activities. We have remained patient and committed to democratic politics for the sake of the country. Today, truth has prevailed, and we have regained our rightful political rights.”
JAGPA Vice President and spokesperson Rashed Pradhan claimed the earlier deregistration was politically motivated. “Regardless of the official reasons cited, the real motive behind the cancellation was JAGPA’s firm stance against Indian dominance and aggression in regional affairs,” he said.
“The move followed a plan influenced by Indian interests and directives from the Sheikh Hasina-led government. Attempts to weaken our party both at home and abroad have now been halted—Alhamdulillah.”
