Jahangirnagar University (JU) has named the road from the main gate to the Shaheed Minar as the “Afsana Karim Rachi Memorial Road” in memory of late student Afsana Karim Rachi, a 53rd batch (2023–24) Marketing Department student.
The nameplate was inaugurated through a prayer assembly and a brief discussion at around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said, “Rachi’s family set a remarkable example of humanity by declining the university’s compensation offer and requesting only that no student should lose their life in such a tragic manner again.”
He praised her parents for demonstrating extraordinary patience, compassion, and courage, saying, “The university administration expresses its deep respect to them.”
Prof Ahsan also noted that Rachi’s family agreed to the controlled reintroduction of autorickshaw operations on campus under regulated policies to ensure students’ convenience and safety, expressing gratitude on behalf of the university.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by JU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Sohel Ahmed, faculty deans, the Proctor, teachers, students, and Rachi’s family. JUCSU leaders, including Vice-President Abdur Rashid Zitu, General Secretary Mazharul Islam, and Transport and Communication Secretary Tanvir Rahman, were also present.
Rachi tragically lost her life last year in a rickshaw accident on the JU campus. Naming the road after her aims to preserve her memory and honor her life.
