A clash broke out between two factions of the Jaitya Nagorik Party (NCP) over a financial dispute at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Convention Hall at Shahbagh area in Dhaka on Friday evening.
According to witnesses, an NCP coordination meeting for Dhaka city and district units was taking place on the third floor of the convention hall, while party activists from the Mohammadpur and Bangshal units were gathered on the second floor.
Around 6:15 PM, an argument between the two groups escalated into a violent altercation, leaving a party activist named Yusuf from the Bangshal unit injured.
Sources said the conflict stemmed from a financial transaction made three months ago. Several leaders from the Bangshal unit had engaged in a business deal with a company in Mohammadpur.
When the issue was brought to the attention of Shoeb, a leader of the NCP’s Dhaka North unit, he assigned Riyan, a Mohammadpur-based leader, to mediate.
However, Riyan allegedly took Tk 2 lakh from the Bangshal leaders and later attempted to detain them, though they managed to escape. Since then, the Bangshal faction had repeatedly demanded their money back without success.
The tension reached a boiling point on Friday when both parties came face to face at the convention hall, leading to heated arguments, pushing, and a physical confrontation.
Police were later informed about the incident, but no official complaint had been filed as of Friday night.
