BNP has called on the current interim government to perform its duties with neutrality, similar to the role previously played by a caretaker government (CTG), according to Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday, Dr Nazrul said BNP made this request during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus the previous evening.

“They did not demand the reinstatement of a caretaker government. Rather, they asked that the present interim administration act neutrally, in the spirit of a caretaker setup,” he said. “We assured them that the interim government is already functioning in a neutral capacity.”

Dr Nazrul further noted that Chief Adviser Yunus has pledged to ensure continued neutrality and has taken personal responsibility for overseeing major administrative transfers and other critical decisions.

When asked whether the advisory council would be reduced during the election period, Dr Nazrul clarified that no such proposal had been discussed.

“This issue has not been raised by any party and no demand has been made for a smaller election-time cabinet. It remains an internal matter for the advisory council to consider,” he said.

Addressing allegations of bias, Dr Nazrul remarked, “All political parties accuse us of favouring others; some say we lean toward one side, others claim the opposite. This only goes to show that we are, in fact, maintaining neutrality.”

He expressed optimism that scepticism surrounding the government's role would diminish as progress is made in implementing the July Declaration. “Once tangible steps are visible, doubts will begin to fade,” he added.

Dr Nazrul also addressed the appearance of serving army officials before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday in connection with cases related to enforced disappearances, torture at the TFI Cell and JIC during Awami League regime and the July Mass Uprising.

“We are witnessing a very positive gesture from the army in showing respect for the rule of law,” he said.

He praised the army’s cooperation with the judicial process, highlighting the respectful manner in which the personnel were presented before the tribunal.

“The support extended by the army administration, senior military officials and the Chief of Army Staff in this process is truly commendable,” he stated.
