The Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Bangladesh Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) staged a silent sit-in protest on Sunday, condemning the gang rape of a female student from Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP).
The demonstration, held at the Central Shaheed Minar on JU campus from 4:00 pm, demanded swift justice and immediate arrest of the accused. Students carried placards reading, “We Condemn Rape,” “Justice Now for Survivors,” “Hang the Rapists,” “Ensure Women’s Safety,” and “A Rapist is No Human.”
JU JCD Convener Jahir Uddin Mohammad Babor criticized the systemic impunity surrounding sexual violence, stating, “No recent gang rape case has ended in proper prosecution. This emboldens criminals. The BUP student’s assault is a national shame.” He also condemned the media blackout on the case, urging the interim government to ensure fast-track trials and capital punishment as per law.
Tanzila Hossain Boishakhi, JU JCD convening committee member, called on authorities to respect women’s rights, support the demands of BUP students, and prosecute all pending rape cases since the interim government took office.
The program was led by JU JCD Joint Convener Humayun Habib Hiron and attended by leaders including Sheikh Sadi Hasan, S M Faisal, K M Riyad, Razon Sarkar, and Hamidullah Salman.
The protest concluded with calls for institutional accountability, stricter legal enforcement, and urgent reforms to safeguard women—particularly within educational institutions.
