An extremist leader was reportedly shot and stabbed to death by rival factions over a dispute for dominance in Faridpur, Pabna.
The incident occurred on Thursday (October 16) around 4:30 p.m. in front of a madrasa at Mongolgram Bazar.
Faridpur Police Station officer-in-charge Shakil Azam confirmed the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Abdul Matin, 46, from Shrikol Bottola area under Ataikula Thana in Pabna Sadar. Reports indicate that he was a leader of an extremist Naxalite group.
OC Shakil Azam said that there had been ongoing conflicts between two extremist Naxalite factions in the area over dominance. On Thursday afternoon, rival members allegedly shot and stabbed Abdul Matin in front of the madrasa before fleeing the scene.
Locals rescued Matin in critical condition and took him to Pabna General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the evening.
The police visited the scene after receiving information about the incident. However, the identities of the attackers have not yet been confirmed. Investigations are ongoing, and further details will be released later. Preliminary reports suggest that the killing was motivated by the local dominance struggle.
Since the incident, the area has been tense, with residents expressing fear. Police have increased surveillance, and locals note that previously hidden extremist group members have become active again. Faridpur Upazila, which is surrounded by rivers and canals, hosts members of extremist groups, prompting calls from residents for law enforcement agencies to act more strictly to maintain law and order.
