A professor of Rajshahi University died in a tragic road accident in Rajshahi's Paba upazila on Friday.
The accident occurred around 7 AM near the Ansar Camp in Nowhata area of the upazila, on the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway.
The dead Shiv Shankar Roy, 58, hailed from Pabna's Sujanagar, was a professor of the Marketing Department at Rajshahi University. Professor Md Asaduzzaman of the Philosophy Department was critically injured in the accident.
According to police, Professor Shiv Shankar Roy and Professor Asaduzzaman were going to Nowhata riding on a motorcycle. On the way, an unidentified vehicle hit their motorcycle, leaving them severely injured. Locals rushed them to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, but Professor Roy succumbed to his injuries on the way. Professor Asaduzzaman remains in critical condition and is currently being treated in the ICU.
Professor Faridul of the Marketing Department and Assistant Proctor Professor Gias Uddin said that the two professors were heading to Nowhata early in the morning to go fishing. They were riding Asaduzzaman’s motorcycle when the accident occurred. Professor Roy, who was riding pillion, suffered a fatal head injury. It is suspected he died at the scene.
The accident has cast a pall of grief over Rajshahi University. Teachers and students from the Marketing and Philosophy departments, as well as university officials, have expressed deep sorrow. The Rajshahi University Nationalist Teachers’ Forum also issued a press statement expressing condolences.
