The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has issued a tsunami warning following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off the southern island of Mindanao on Friday.
According to Phivolcs, the powerful undersea quake occurred off the country’s Pacific coast, prompting authorities to warn that one-metre-high waves could hit coastal areas within the next two hours. Residents in affected coastal regions have been strongly advised to evacuate to higher ground or move farther inland for safety.
The earthquake, which struck at a depth of around 25 kilometres, was felt across several parts of Mindanao, causing panic among residents. Authorities said aftershocks are expected, and assessments are underway to determine any possible damage or casualties.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) also confirmed the possibility of hazardous tsunami waves along the coasts of the Philippines and neighbouring countries.
Local officials and emergency response teams have been mobilised, while disaster management agencies continue to monitor the situation closely.
