Bangladesh are set for a high-stakes showdown with Hong Kong China on Thursday night in a decisive 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifier.

The match kicks off at 8 PM local time at Dhaka’s National Stadium.

For Jamal Bhuiyan and his teammates, it’s all or nothing. Sitting at the bottom of their four-team group with just one point from two games, Bangladesh must win to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the Asian Cup; a stage they haven’t reached in 45 years.

Group leaders Hong Kong have collected four points so far and can secure progression to the next round with a victory in Dhaka.

Much of the spotlight will be on Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury, whose arrival has brought renewed energy to the squad and excitement among fans. Choudhury made his intentions clear earlier in the week, confidently stating, “We’ll win.”

Head coach Javier Cabrera believes his players are ready for the challenge ahead.

“Hong Kong are a solid team, but we’ve studied them closely. We know where they’re strong and where we can hurt them. The home crowd will be our extra man,” Cabrera said at a pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Bangladesh’s midfield is shaping up well with the inclusion of Canada-born Shamit Som and Italy-raised Fahmidul Islam.

However, concerns remain over the fitness of key players in both defence and attack.

Despite the odds, fan support is expected to be massive. Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) confirmed that all 19,000 tickets were snapped up within just 30 minutes.

BFF also assured improved security measures following chaotic scenes during June’s friendly against Singapore, where fans broke into restricted areas.

Historically, Bangladesh have struggled against Hong Kong, having lost all four of their previous encounters; including a comfortable win for Hong Kong in their last meeting.

Still, with a packed stadium and everything on the line, Bangladesh will be hoping to script a new chapter in their footballing story.
