Gold prices have surged past Tk 200,000 mark per bhori (11.664 grams) for the first time in history, following yet another hike within 24 hours.

The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) announced on Monday night that the price of 22-carat gold has been increased by Tk 3,150 per bhori, effective from Tuesday (October 11).

With the latest adjustment, the price of 22-carat gold now stands at Tk 200,726 per bhori — the highest in the country’s history. The price of 21-carat gold has been set at Tk 191,605, 18-carat gold at Tk 164,229, and traditional gold at Tk 136,445 per bhori.

BAJUS said in its circular that the hike was due to a rise in the price of pure (acid) gold in the local market. “Considering the overall situation, gold prices have been adjusted accordingly,” it stated.

The announcement comes just three days after BAJUS raised gold prices by Tk 2,193 per bhori on Saturday. At that time, 22-carat gold was priced at Tk 197,576 per bhori.

The association also noted that an additional 5 percent VAT set by the government and a minimum 6 percent making charge determined by BAJUS must be added to the selling price. The final making charge may vary depending on the design and quality of jewelry.

Meanwhile, silver prices remain unchanged. The price of 22-carat silver stands at Tk 3,628 per bhori — the highest on record — while 21-carat, 18-carat, and traditional silver are priced at Tk 3,453, Tk 2,963, and Tk 2,228 per bhori, respectively.
