Negligence at Charfassion hospital leads to newborn death

A newborn died during a normal delivery at Ikra Hospital and Diagnostic Centre of Charfassion in Bhola on Sunday, allegedly due to negligence by an inexperienced nurse and attendant.

The baby’s father, Md. Babul, accused the hospital director Poli and gynecologist Dr. Akhi Akhtar of failing to supervise the delivery.

Babul said that his wife, Taslima Begum, had been receiving regular treatment from Dr. Akhi. On the day of delivery, she was referred to Ikra Hospital, where Dr. Akhi was reportedly absent, leaving the delivery to untrained staff. The hospital did not inform the family about the procedure, and the newborn died during the process.
Local residents claimed that Dr. Akhi had been involved in similar incidents at other clinics in the past, leading to protests, yet was brought back to Charfashan. Concerns were also raised about unauthorized clinics conducting unnecessary procedures.

Efforts to contact Dr. Akhi were unsuccessful.

Upazila Health Officer Dr. Shovon Kumar Bashak said that an investigation in this connection is underway, while Bhola Civil Surgeon Dr. Monirul Islam said action would be taken if negligence is verified.
