Teachers and employees under the banner of the 'MPO-affiliated Education Nationalisation Alliance' have announced a continuous sit-in from October 12 near Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
''The government's increase in house rent allowance by Tk 500 is a mockery of teachers. In the current time, this amount is not enough to buy even one day's market for a family. We reject the government's this decision and reiterate our demand for an increase in house rent and medical allowance at the rate of 20 per cent of the basic salary,'' said Prof Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary 'Alliance for Nationalisation'.
He further said, "We are making a reasonable demands keeping respect to the government. But the ministry has made proposals in four slots - 5, 10, 15 and 20 percent, which does not meet the expectations of the teachers. We want a clear notification of the 20 pe rcent increase in allowance."
The government has raised the house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and staff from Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,500, according to a Finance Division order issued on September 30.
However, teachers have rejected the decision, demanding that the house rent allowance be fixed at 20 per ent of the basic salary and that the medical allowance be raised from Tk 500 to Tk 1,500.
