Highest number of dengue patients in a single day, 9 die

The highest number of dengue deaths and infections in the country occurred in September. Public health experts said that the situation could worsen in October or November.

The outbreak of dengue started increasing at the beginning of this month (October). In the last 24 hours from 8 am Saturday to 8 am Sunday, around 1,042 more people were admitted to the hospital with dengue fever, which is the highest in a single day.

And the highest numbers of 845 people were admitted to the hospital on September 28, according to the regular dengue report of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to the report, at least nine people died during this period. Earlier, on September 21, nine people died due to the Aedes mosquito-borne disease in 24 hours. That is, the highest number of deaths this year in a single day is nine.

The DGHS's Sunday report bulletin said that 49,907 people were admitted to hospitals with dengue fever this year. And the death toll has increased to 212.

Of the latest 9 deaths, four died at Mugda Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. In addition, two were undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, one at DNCC Covid-19 Hospital, one at Mitford Hospital and one at Cox's Bazar 250-bed hospital, it said.

Four of them were men and five were women. Their ages ranged from 17 to 55 years, it further said.

According to the DGHS, this year, the highest number of people were admitted to hospitals with dengue in September, the highest number of deaths was also recorded. Last month, 15,866 patients were admitted to hospitals, 76 died.

In the four days of October, 2,565 people were admitted to hospitals; and 14 died.

DGHS report also read that 322, the highest number of patients admitted in 24 hours, were from the two city corporation areas of Dhaka.

In addition, 201 patients were admitted in Dhaka division, 195 in Barishal division, 41 in Mymensingh division, 104 in Chattogram division, 72 in Khulna division, 82 in Rajshahi division, 23 in Rangpur division, and 5 in Sylhet division.

Meanwhile, 898 dengue patients across the country were discharged from hospitals in a single day, bringing the total number of people discharged this year to 47,256.

Earlier, 101,214 people were infected with dengue and 575 died in 2024. Before that, 1,705 people died due to dengue in 2023 while 321,179 people were admitted to the hospital.
