UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, met BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday and discussed the country's current political situation, upcoming election, Bangladesh's democratic future and the Rohingya issue.

The meeting started at 11am and lasted for about an hour at the BNP Chairperson's Office in Gulshan.

After the meeting, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury told reporters that the United Nations is committed to helping restore democracy in Bangladesh.

He said that to achieve this, democratic practices and mutual understanding among political parties are essential.

Amir Khosru said BNP believes everyone must work together to bring back democratic order in the current situation.

He said the main demand of the people now is the restoration of democracy. "This can only be ensured through a free, fair, and participatory election. We also discussed how the upcoming election, expected in the first half of February, can be held successfully," he added.

He said the Rohingya issue was also discussed. They talked about the difficult living conditions of the Rohingyas.

"The discussion included how the Bangladesh government and the international community can continue to support them. Ms Lewis assured that the UN will keep helping the Rohingyas until they can return to their homeland," Amir Khosru said.
