A man was allegedly beaten to death in a brutal attack linked to a long-standing land dispute at Morrelganj upazila of Bagerhat district on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Md Kalam Khan, 48, son of Wazed Ali Khan of Dhepua Para village under Chingrikhali union in the upazila.

His elder brother, Lutfar Khan, was critically injured and is undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.

According to locals, Kalam and his brothers were attacked at around 9 PM by a group of people led by their cousin Sohel, as they were involved in a dispute over 15-20 bigha of ancestral land.

Later, locals rescued the injured and took them to Morrelganj Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctors declared Kalam dead and referred Lutfer to Khulna Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Bagerhat Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the incident and said that police drives are underway to arrest the accused.

Following the incident, Kalam's son Rabbi filed a murder case naming 12 accused, including Sohel.

Locals alleged Sohel had several prior cases against him with Morrelganj Police Station, including robbery, assault, and narcotics. He has remained untraceable since the incident.
