8 killed by lightning in four districts

Eight people lost their lives and two others were injured in lightning strikes across Cumilla, Bogura, Kurigram, and Jhenaidah districts on Sunday.

In Cumilla, a single lightning strike in Bhabanipur Kheyaghat, Homna Upazila, killed three people, including Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) student Rashedul Islam, 23, and two sisters, Mamtaz Begum, 37, and Zakia Sultana, 23, all from Nala Dakkhin village. The victims were struck while waiting to cross a canal. The injured, including Rashedul, were taken to Homna Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead.

In Jhenaidah, two farmers were killed by lightning strikes in Sadar and Shailkupa Upazilas. Shimul Biswas, 30, was struck while working in his field in Armukhi village, and Harmat Sheikh, 55, died in Shekhar village while collecting crops.

Kurigram also saw two deaths. Madrasa student Babul Mia, son of Nur Hossain, was killed on his way home in Kalikapur village, while Sahibor, son of Abul Kashem, died in Char Luchni village while collecting grass.

In Bogura, 45-year-old housewife Shefali Begum of Madhyamacheo village, Gabtoli Upazila, was killed on the spot by lightning while cutting grass in the rain.

Authorities have confirmed the fatalities amid inclement weather across the affected districts.
