BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that holding an election is crucial to restore the democratic process in post-uprising Bangladesh.
He made the remarks while speaking at a meeting with United Nations resident coordinator Gwyn Lewis and senior human rights
adviser Huma Khan at the BNP Chairperson's office at Gulshan in Dhaka on Sunday.
Khasru said, "Everyone must unite and work together to re-establish democracy and restore the democratic order in the country."
During the discussion, the leaders covered the country's political and democratic development, as well as the ongoing Rohingya crisis, expressing concerns over the refugees’ future and security. They also explored potential measures to support the affected population.
He praised UN resident coordinator Gwyn Lewis for her contributions during the anti-autocratic movement, stating, "As her term ends, we, on behalf of BNP, thank her for her important role for the country."
Highlighting the UN’s broader contributions to democracy and human rights, he said, "The UN played a courageous role during the autocratic rule."
In response, Gwyn Lewis stressed, "Bangladesh needs adequate cooperation to tackle the Rohingya crisis."
The meeting was also attended by BNP Acting Chairman’s International Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir, Organizing Secretary, and Special Associate Adviser for Foreign Policy Shama Obaed.
