North South University (NSU) has permanently expelled student Apurba Pal following a Qur'an desecration incident on campus, whilst authorities have initiated legal proceedings against him.
The decision came through an emergency Disciplinary Committee meeting on Sunday as confirmed by Syed Mansur Hashim, Director of the Public Relations Office.
Police arrested Pal after eyewitnesses reported the desecration on Saturday morning inside university premises. The Proctorial Body and Security Department swiftly controlled the situation, whilst fellow students demonstrated remarkable restraint, helping maintain campus harmony.
The incident sparked widespread outrage after video footage circulated on social media, allegedly uploaded by Pal from his personal Facebook account. Around 01:00 on Sunday, students and local residents gathered outside Pal's Bashundhara Residential Area home demanding action.
During the police operation to detain him, some crowd members physically assaulted the accused, prompting authorities to transport him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The university's official statement emphasised that students showed exceptional tolerance during the crisis, preserving an atmosphere of coexistence on campus. The administration has confirmed that a legal case will be filed over the matter.
The swift action by NSU authorities reflects the university's zero-tolerance approach towards religious desecration, whilst the incident highlights growing tensions surrounding religious sensitivity in educational institutions.
