A Dhaka court has ordered imprisonment of North South University (NSU) student Apurba Pal, accused of desecrating the Holy Quran.

The student was produced before the court on Sunday where investigating officer Sub-Inspector Chand Mia of Vatara Police Station sought to keep him in custody. After the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman sent him to jail.

According to the police, evidence has been found linking Apurba Pal to the alleged desecration. During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly admitted to the act. Investigators said he might be remanded later for further questioning.

Police arrested Apurba Pal late Saturday night from a residential area in the capital, following allegations that he desecrated the Quran inside the NSU campus earlier that day. The incident sparked protests among students, prompting university authorities to intervene and remove the accused from campus.

Videos related to the incident later circulated on social media, allegedly shared from the student’s own Facebook account. Angry students and locals reportedly gathered outside his residence that night, leading police to detain him and bring him to the station.

A case under blasphemy-related charges was subsequently filed by Sub-Inspector Hasmat Ali of Vatara Police Station.
