A court in Dhaka on Sunday acquitted BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 22 others in a case filed under the Explosives Act over alleged violence in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Foyez issued the order after hearing arguments from the defence, who described the charges as politically motivated and baseless.
The case was filed in connection with the party's rally on October 28, 2023, at Nayapaltan, where clashes broke out between party activists and police. According to the complaint, crude bombs were detonated near Bijoynagar and police vehicles were attacked.
The accused included several BNP and Jubo Dal leaders, among them Nurul Islam Noyon, Robiul Islam Noyon, Khandaker Enamul Haque Enam, Sharif Uddin Jewel, Sajjadul Miraj, Asif Omar Faruq, and Lokman Hossain Fakir.
The court’s decision ends proceedings against all 22 accused in the case.
