At least 20 people died in Darjeeling, northern India, following severe floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains and a powerful overnight cyclone, a local lawmaker confirmed on Sunday.
"In the wake of last night's heavy cyclone in the Darjeeling hills, over 20 people have lost their lives," said Harsh Vardhan Shringla, a member of India’s upper house of parliament.
The torrential rains caused widespread destruction, with roads destroyed and multiple areas cut off, making rescue and relief efforts more difficult. Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and search for survivors, with fears that the death toll could rise as more remote areas are reached.
The hill district, known for its steep terrain and fragile infrastructure, is particularly vulnerable to landslides during intense rainfall. Emergency response teams have been deployed, and the Indian Army is reportedly assisting in relief operations.
