On its 27th birthday, Google took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, celebrating the milestone with a special Doodle showcasing its very first logo.
Marking nearly three decades of organizing world’s information, the tech giant reminded users of its humble beginnings inside a garage and how a simple idea became one of the most powerful innovations in digital history.
“We’re getting nostalgic with our first logo,” said Google. “Search on.”
Google Doodles are known for celebrating historic events, global personalities and cultural milestones.
This time, the company paid tribute to its own origin story; bringing back the 1998 logo that first appeared when the company was founded with a mission to "organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful."
Recalling its humble beginnings, Google noted, “On our birthday, we’re remembering our simple start; when our journey began from a garage. Proof that big ideas can come from small places.”
Google was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were pursuing PhDs at Stanford University. Initially, their search engine was called “BackRub,” which ranked web pages based on backlinks. It was later renamed “Google”, a play on the mathematical term “googol.”
Thanks to its fast and highly relevant search results, Google quickly gained popularity. But the company didn’t stop at search; it expanded rapidly, launching products like Gmail, Google Maps, Android, Chrome and acquiring YouTube.
Major milestones include its IPO in 2004 and the formation of Alphabet Inc. in 2015, under which Google now operates as a subsidiary.
Today, Google is far more than a search engine. It stands as one of the most influential tech companies in the world, setting benchmarks in artificial intelligence, digital advertising, cloud computing and consumer technology.
