A housewife committed suicide by setting herself on fire after pouring kerosene on herself following a family dispute in Kotalipara Upazila of Gopalganj district on Sunday morning.
The deceased is identified as Jhorna Begum, 36, wife of US expatriate Siddiqur Rahman Tanukdar, a resident of Pinjuri village of the upazila.
According to locals, Siddiqur Rahman Talukdar, who is an expatriate in the United States, had been away from home for a long time, leading to frequent arguments between the couple over the phone.
As a result of one such dispute, Jhorna Begum locked herself in her room in the morning, poured kerosene on her body and set herself on fire.
When family members saw smoke coming from the room, they broke down the door and rushed Jhorna Begum to Kotalipara Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctors declared her dead.
Kotalipara Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Mamunur Rashid confirmed the incident and said that they will take action after receiving a complaint.
