Awami League still conspiring from India: Major Hafiz

BNP Standing Committee Member and former MP of Bhola-3, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, has alleged that Awami League, after being ousted by public outrage, continues to conspire against the country from India, aiming to destroy the democratic rights of its people.

Speaking at a public rally at Gojaria Bazar, organised by BNP’s Char Umed and Motahar Nagar union units at Lalmohan upazila in Bhola Bhola district, on Thursday, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed accused Awami League of turning Bangladesh into a symbol of misrule.

He claimed that the party repeatedly lost public trust and was cast aside by people into “dustbin of history.”

He alleged that Awami League attempted to strip citizens of their voting rights and turn Bangladesh into a de facto state of India.

“Even after fleeing the country, Awami League leaders are sitting in India and plotting to destroy the fate of Bangladeshis,” Hafiz claimed.

Referring to past years under Sheikh Hasina’s rule, he said, “In the last 17 years, the people of Bangladesh have suffered under an unprecedented level of oppression. The cries of the people have been heard by Allah and divine punishment has befallen Awami League, forcing them to flee.”

He added that interim government has now been formed to restore democracy and only a government elected by the people can be truly representative.

“Unelected government currently in place has no direct connection with ordinary people,” he said, expressing hope that the February 2026 election would be held in a free and fair manner.

Addressing concerns about election disruptions, Hafiz criticised some political parties that, he claimed, lack public support and are therefore trying to obstruct the electoral process.

“They know they cannot win through votes, so they don’t want elections or democratic governance. Their demands are irrational and will not be accepted by the people,” he asserted.

Earlier in the day, Major (Retd.) Hafiz attended a separate event organised by Lalmohan Upazila and Municipality BNP at Public Library Auditorium, where he spoke at a gathering of religious scholars.

The public meeting was presided over by Lalmohan Upazila BNP President Md Zafar Iqbal and moderated by General Secretary Shafiqul Islam Babul.

Other local BNP leaders, including former joint conveners Principal Farid Uddin and Sohel Aziz Shahin, as well as leaders from union and municipal BNP units and affiliated organisations, were present.
