The monthly meeting of Law and Order Committee, organized by Sundarganj Upazila Administration in Gaibandha district, was held on Monday at Upazila Parishad conference room.
The meeting was presided over by Upazila Parishad Administrator and Executive Officer Rajkumar Biswas.
Among the attendees were Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Gaibandha district unit, Assistant Professor Mazedur Rahman; Upazila Nayeb-e-Ameer Shohedul Islam Monzu; and Municipal Ameer Akramul Haque.
Union Parishad chairmen, various government officials and the officer-in-charge of Sundarganj Police Station, Abdul Hakim Azad, were also present.
During the meeting, participants discussed a range of issues related to improving the overall law and order situation in the upazila.
However, absence of BNP leaders from the Law and Order Committee drew attention.
Reportedly, the convener and member secretary from BNP side did not attend the meeting.
When asked, local BNP leaders outside Upazila Parishad claimed that the current BNP convening committee is both illegal and expired.
According to them, the committee is inactive and detached from political mainstream due to personal involvement in business interests such as markets, land, sand extraction, schools and colleges.
They also alleged irregularities, internal corruption and dissatisfaction among grassroots BNP leaders.
The absence of BNP’s representation in such an important meeting was attributed to a lack of political legitimacy and activity of the current committee.
Many BNP leaders expressed the demand for the dissolution of the present convening committee and called for immediate formation of a new committee to revitalize the organization in the upazila.
The meeting was attended by Municipal BNP Joint Convener and BRDB Chairman Iftekhar Hossain Popel, former student leader and Municipal BNP Joint Convener Nahmudul Haque Rasel, Upazila Joint Conveners Shakhawat Hossain Milon and Shakhawat Hossain Badsha, along with Jubo Dal leaders Anowar Hossain, Mostak Ahmed and several student leaders.
When asked about the discussions, Upazila Administrator Rajkumar Biswas stated that various topics concerning peace and law and order were raised and he would work towards implementing the proposals.
Regarding the absence of BNP leaders, he noted that they did not provide any valid reason for missing the meeting.
