A court in Dhaka on Sunday expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation into the murder of the journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi. At the same time, it rescheduled the probe report submission date on November 30.

With today, the investigation report in the murder case has been deferred for the 121st occasion.

Investigation Officer and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Additional Superintendent Azizul Haque told the court that DNA analysis had revealed mixed profiles of two individuals, but investigators were still unable to identify them. He claimed to have questioned journalists, neighbors, relatives and DNA experts, but no conclusive breakthrough had been made.

The court noted that previous investigators had cited similar reasons and warned that it remained unsatisfied with the progress. The judge directed the officer to make every possible effort to advance the probe.

A total of eight suspects, including Runi’s friend Tanvir Rahman and several others such as security guard Enam Ahmed, have been arrested in connection with the case. All were remanded multiple times, but none confessed.

Sagar, news editor at Maasranga Television, and Runi, senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were murdered at their rented flat in Dhaka’s West Rajabazar on 11 February 2012. Their bodies were discovered the following morning, sparking national outrage.

The case has since shifted across several agencies. Initially handled by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police and later the Detective Branch (DB), it was transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Last year, following a High Court directive, a four-member high-powered task force led by the PBI chief was formed to complete the investigation within six months.

More than a decade later, the murder remains unsolved, fueling public frustration over the lack of justice.
