The long-awaited results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JACSU) and hall union elections began to be announced at the Senate Building on Saturday afternoon, marking the first central student union polls in nearly 33 years.

The ceremony, which began at 5:15 PM, opened with a minute of silence in tribute to the late Assistant Professor Jannatul Ferdous. Election Commission Secretary and University Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam presented the final outcomes before a gathering of students, faculty, and observers.

Voting took place on Thursday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM across all 21 residential halls. With concerns raised over the potential manipulation of electronic vote-counting machines linked to political groups, the Election Commission opted for fully manual counting to ensure transparency.

Several major student organizations, including Chhatra Dal and left-leaning alliances, withdrew their candidates ahead of polling, leaving 111 candidates from three remaining panels to contest the central union posts.

Counting commenced around 7:00 PM on Thursday after ballot boxes were transported to the Senate Building and continued for nearly 40 hours. Of 11,743 registered voters — 6,015 male and 5,728 female — 8,003 cast their votes, yielding a robust voter turnout of 68%.

A total of 177 candidates competed for 25 JACSU executive positions: 9 for Vice President, 8 for General Secretary, 6 for female Joint Secretary, 10 for male Joint Secretary.

Additionally, 445 candidates contested 147 seats across the 21 hall unions.

The election represents a historic revival of democratic student governance at Jahangirnagar University, ending decades of institutional stagnation. The newly elected JUCSU and hall union executives are expected to be formally inaugurated in the coming days, signaling a renewed era of student representation and campus activism.
