Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Thursday hosted a dinner for member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), seeking support for its re-election to the IMO Council.

Bangladesh made history in 2023 by winning a seat in the competitive Category C, securing 128 votes at the London headquarters.

The 40-member IMO Council shapes global maritime policy, with Category C ensuring representation of countries with special maritime interests and broad geographic balance.

Shipping Secretary Mohammed Yousuf highlighted Bangladesh's expanding maritime transport sector and the growing role of its ports in global trade.

Department of Shipping Director General Commodore Md Shafiul Bari presented a detailed report, while Deputy High Commissioner Preeti Rahman also spoke.

The event drew envoys and senior diplomats from dozens of embassies, underscoring Bangladesh's diplomatic push ahead of the upcoming IMO Council election.
