At least 10 people were killed and 41 others injured when a freight train collided with a double-decker passenger bus in Atlacomulco, a town roughly 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Mexico City, local officials confirmed on Monday.
Surveillance footage shared by local media captured the moment of impact, showing the train plowing through the bus as it attempted to cross the tracks. Notably, the video reveals the absence of crossing gates at the intersection, while nearby vehicles had stopped and were not attempting to cross.
Adrian Hernandez, a civil protection official for the State of Mexico, said four of the injured were in critical condition.
“The total we have is 41 injured, and 10 people confirmed dead,” Hernandez said.
Shocking images from the scene showed the bus heavily damaged, with its roof and rear section completely torn off. Social media videos showed dazed and injured passengers climbing out of the wreckage.
Authorities have arrested the bus driver, who is currently in the custody of the State of Mexico prosecutor’s office.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation, but the absence of proper crossing barriers is expected to be a focus.
