While geothermal is geographically limited to tectonically active regions, breakthroughs in deep drilling technology could one day unlock geothermal potential almost everywhere. Tidal and wave energy could become valuable complements to more established renewables, especially for island nations. One of the most promising frontiers is green hydrogen, produced by using renewable electricity to split water molecules. Hydrogen can be stored and transported like traditional fuels and though currently expensive, investments are rapidly driving down costs.
The unifying trend across all these technologies is a steep decline in cost. What was once dismissed as an idealistic alternative has become economically rational. Renewables are no longer dependent on subsidies to compete; in fact, fossil fuels increasingly look like the expensive, outdated option. Elon Musk, through Tesla and SolarCity, has revolutionized the perception of renewable energy by integrating solar panels, battery storage, and electric vehicles into a coherent ecosystem. Bill Gates, through Breakthrough Energy Ventures, has directed billions toward renewable innovation while emphasizing on tackling climate change through scalable, cost-effective clean energy solutions. Jeff Bezos pledged $10 billion through the Bezos Earth Fund to combat climate change, with a significant portion aimed at renewable energy development and deployment. Even traditional energy magnates have begun diversifying into renewables. Oil giants such as BP, Shell, and Total have announced multibillion-dollar plans to transform into integrated energy companies focused on renewables, signaling that the fossil fuel era is waning.
Perhaps the most compelling reason to embrace renewables lies in their environmental benefits. Fossil fuels are the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, which drive global warming, rising sea levels, and increasingly catastrophic weather events. The continued burning of coal and oil threatens the very habitability of the planet. Renewables, by contrast, emit little to no greenhouse gases during operation. Transitioning to renewables would dramatically reduce air pollution, which currently causes millions of premature deaths annually. Cleaner air would mean healthier populations, reduced healthcare costs, and higher productivity. Moreover, renewable projects often require less water than traditional power plants, alleviating pressure on freshwater supplies. Bangladesh is also going through investments in renewable energy, though not large scale, for a while in both private and public forms. We hope, along with the developed world, Bangladesh will also focus on renewable energy to secure its development and progress.
