CHATTOGRAM, Sept 7: The Chattagong Port Authority (CPA) has been trying hard to make two biggest ever Container terminals operational by the year 2030.
In this connection, they have been working effortlessly, to complete the construction works of the Matarbari Deep Sea Port and the Bay Terminal.
The CPA authorities opined that the Matarbari port will be a 'game changer' for the country's economy. CPA is working tirelessly to transform Matarbari Port into a regional transshipment hub.
Meanwhile, CPA signed an agreement with Japanese companies Pentaocean Construction and Towa Corporation on April 22 for the construction of two jetties under Package-1 of the deep sea port project.
Under this package, a 300-metre multipurpose jetty and a 460-metre container jetty will be built, along with terminal buildings, pavements, sea walls, retaining walls, land development, dredging, solar power facilities, and other utilities.
Once completed, the port will be able to handle vessels carrying up to 8,200 TEUs, with a draft of 14.5 metres and a length of 300 metres.
The 2nd revised DPP for this fast-track project with the assistance of JICA was approved by the ECNEC on October 7, 2024. The Chattogram to Cox's Bazar area has vast potentials to become as like as Singapore.
Investors are ready and huge opportunities await our prospective young generation. However, they want to be assured about maritime and port security.
After five years, five million TEUs of containers will have to be handled. In view of this, agreements were signed with Japan to build a terminal and bay terminal at Matarbari deep sea port.
Taking the issue as a significant step for boosting the country's economy, the CPA issued a Request for Expressions of Interest (EoI) on August 26, 2025, to appoint an international consulting firms to develop tariff structures for this purpose.
The deadline for submission of their EOI on September 30 next. The selected firm will create tariff proposals based on cost, efficiency, and financial sustainability for these major new port projects.
The consulting firm will be responsible for preparing proposals for the tariff structure of both ports. This involves analyzing the costs of services, utilities, and facilities.
Construction of the Matarbari Deep Sea Terminal is progressing at Maheshkhali upazila in Cox's Bazar, while the Bay Terminal is being developed in Chattogram's Halishahar area.
