DINAJPUR, Sept 4: Hili Land Port in the district has witnessed a significant rise in import and export activities, bringing much-needed vibrancy to the region.

Since August 12, operations at the port have surged, breaking the long period of inactivity. The increase in trade has brought both traders and workers back to the port, creating a bustling atmosphere.

According to Hili Customs, during the first 11 days of August, 229 Indian trucks imported 6,248 metric tons of goods.

However, between August 12 and 27, the number of trucks surged to 1,313, delivering a total of 48,537 metric tons of goods.

In the same period, exports to India reached 2,091 metric tons, generating nearly Tk 18 crore in revenue.

On a visit to Hili Land Port on Thursday, the scene was lively, with a substantial presence of traders from across the country.

Both Indian and domestic trucks were seen loading and unloading goods, while workers were busy handling cargo.

Previously, only 10 to 15 Indian trucks would enter the port daily, but now that number has raised to 130 to150 trucks, significantly increasing the bustle inside the port as well as boosting local businesses like hotels, shops and transportation services.

Labourers working at the port including Abdul Bakkar, Alim and Khorshed shared how the port had been nearly deserted for a long time, making it difficult to sustain their families.

Now, with the growing trade, they are able to earn a regular income.

Importer Noor Islam mentioned that, due to high rice prices in the country, he has been bringing rice from India, which is helping stabilize market supply.

Shakhawat Hossain Shilpi, President of Hili Importers and Exporters Group, noted that trade at the port had once come to a standstill but is now thriving again, with a significant increase in rice imports.

The growth in trade is generating more job opportunities for workers and stimulating the entire economic activity around Hili Port.

Nizam Uddin, a revenue officer at Hili Customs, confirmed the surge in shipments, with 48,537 metric tons of goods arriving in just 16 days in August.

The goods mainly consist of raw materials and essential commodities and customs procedures are being expedited to handle the influx.

The recent boom in imports and exports has brought new life to Hili Port, lifting the spirits of workers and traders alike.
