Israel launches new spy satellite to boost Middle East surveillance

Israel has successfully launched a new spy satellite, Ofek 19, which defense officials are calling a strategic asset that will significantly strengthen the country's intelligence-gathering capabilities across the Middle East in the coming years.

Launched late Tuesday, the satellite is designed to provide high-resolution surveillance and will enable the military to conduct persistent, simultaneous monitoring of key areas across the region.

“This is also a message to all our enemies, wherever they may be — we are keeping an eye on you at all times and in all situations,” Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a post on X on Wednesday, highlighting the satellite's role in national security.

Military officials noted that similar satellites were instrumental during a 12-day conflict earlier this year, during which Israel reportedly gathered over 12,000 images of Iranian targets.

Expanded regional monitoring

The new satellite expands Israel’s reconnaissance capabilities beyond Iran, supporting what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described as a “seven-front war.” Israeli forces have conducted operations in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq during the ongoing 23-month war in Gaza.

Maj. Gen. Amir Baram said the Ofek 19 satellite forms part of a broader effort to maintain continuous surveillance across the region.

Advanced space capabilities

Israel is among a select group of nations with advanced satellite technology, including high-resolution monitoring and intelligence-gathering systems. The Ofek 19 adds to a growing fleet of satellites launched in recent years as part of the country’s decades-old space program.

The satellite was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), a state-owned defense contractor that plays a key role in Israel’s economy. IAI manufactures satellites, missile systems, drones, and aircraft for both domestic use and international export to Europe, Asia, and North America.

The military did not disclose the exact location of the launch site for Ofek 19, in keeping with Israel’s usual practice of operational secrecy surrounding its space and defense missions.
