Train services on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route resumed after students lifted the railway blockade at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) area in Mymensingh on Monday.
Train service on this route returned to normal after the blockade was lifted at 6:00 PM.
Confirming the matter, Mymensingh Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Akhter Hossain said that due to the blockade of the railway, the Dhaka-bound Jamalpur commuter train and the Mymensingh-bound Mohonganj Express train were stuck at Fatemanagar station and some other trains were stuck at various places.
The protesting students said that they lifted the blockade out of consideration for passengers’ suffering and due to concerns over possible attacks on students after dark.
“We have started this movement with justified demands. Still, we were attacked. The movement will continue until our demands are met,” said Ahsanul Haque Himel, a third-year student from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, speaking on behalf of the demonstrators.
He announced that a protest procession would be held on the university campus at 8:00 PM.
Tensions began early in the day as students from various halls gathered near KR Market wielding sticks and chanting different slogans. They later regrouped at Amtala within the campus and continued their agitation.
Around11:00 AM, the protesters held a press conference where Himel announced a six-point demand, calling for administrative accountability and improved student safety.
