Bangla Academy authorities have formally questioned lifetime member Professor Akbar Ali Siraji after he was accused of locking the Academy's under-construction Writers' Corner, raising concerns over repeated misconduct.

Director General Professor Mohammad Azam issued a letter on Thursday asking Siraji to respond in writing within five days regarding the allegation.

The Academy stated that Siraji, as a respected lifetime member symbolising the nation's intellectual spirit, is responsible for upholding its reputation.

It alleged that on August 28 around 5:30 pm, he improperly placed his own lock on the main entrance of the Writers' Corner and the Language Training Subdivision office on the second floor of the Dr. Muhammad Enamul Haque building, disrupting access and operations.

The letter further cited previous incidents, including misconduct since the July 2024 uprising, inappropriate behaviour toward female staff, attempts to disrupt events, and interference in Academy activities.

Professor Siraji denied the charges, saying, "I did not lock the place. Three locks and a key were lying on the ground. I told them to keep the keys. Lock-and-key matters are for the security officer to handle."

Responding to allegations of misconduct toward female staff, he added, "Women are like mothers and daughters to me. Why would I do such things? If I did, it would be wrong."

The Academy's letter concludes that Siraji's explanation must be submitted within five days, after which the matter will be referred to the Executive Council for further action.
