Despite a promising start and taking an early lead, Bangladesh suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against powerhouse Malaysia in their opening match of the Asia Cup Hockey.

The game, held on Friday morning at the Bihar Sports Hockey Stadium in Rajgir, saw Bangladesh play evenly with Malaysia in the first quarter.

While the Malaysian team created several goal-scoring opportunities, Bangladesh's defense held firm and denied them any early breakthrough.

In the second quarter, Bangladesh struck first through a penalty corner converted by Ashraful Islam, giving the team a 1-0 advantage.

But Malaysia responded quickly, equalizing in 24th minute to bring the score to 1-1 by halftime.

Momentum shifted in Malaysia’s favour during the second half. They took the lead in the third quarter and added two more goals in the final quarter to secure a dominant 4-1 win.

Bangladesh is participating in this year’s Asia Cup as an invited team and has been placed in Group B alongside Malaysia, South Korea and Chinese Taipei.

While Malaysia and South Korea are significantly stronger opponents, Bangladesh’s primary focus is on their match against Chinese Taipei.

To keep their hopes alive for the 2026 Hockey World Cup qualifiers, Bangladesh aims to defeat Chinese Taipei and minimize goal margins against the stronger teams.

A place in the tournament’s top six would earn them a ticket to the World Cup qualification round.
