Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), has pledged to transform Dhaka University into a fully residential university, addressing what it terms the most pressing concern for students; affordable accommodation.

The announcement came at a press conference held on Thursday at the university’s Madhur Canteen, where Chhatra Dal’s VP candidate Abidul Islam Khan unveiled the core commitment of their campaign ahead of the upcoming DUCSU election.

“Most students at Dhaka University come from middle and lower-middle-income families. Renting mess rooms or hostels outside campus is increasingly unaffordable for them,” Abidul said. “As a result, many are forced to take on multiple private tuitions; sometimes four or five, leaving them with little time to focus on studies.”

He added that this lack of study time has serious academic consequences, with many students seeing their CGPAs fall below 3.50, which limits their chances in competitive job markets.

“Chhatra Dal wants to create an environment where every student can at least have a roof over their head and a table to study on. We don’t need lavish infrastructure. If necessary, we’ll build tin-roofed housing to ensure no student is left without shelter,” he said.

Abidul also mentioned that their full manifesto would be released soon, which will outline detailed, student-friendly plans beyond housing; focused on long-term solutions to academic and campus life challenges.

The press conference was attended by other panel members, including General Secretary (GS) candidate Tanvir Bari Hamim and Assistant GS candidate Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed.
