
Former Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin died at a hospital in Singapore on Tuesday. He underwent an open heart surgery in the hospital recently. He was 75.
Supreme Court's Registrar General Syed Aminul Islam said a second surgery was attempted early on Tuesday as post-operation bleeding continued, but the doctors could not save him.
Justice Amin performed as the 16th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from June 1, 2008 to December 22, 2009 when a military backed caretaker government was in power. He was elevated to a judge of the Appellate Division on July 13, 2003.
Born on Dec 23, 1942, in Lakhsmipur, Justice Amin completed his Masters in History from the Dhaka University in 1963. After completing his LLB in 1966, he joined the judicial service and served as a district and sessions judge.
In 1994, he was appointed a temporary judge for the High Court. Two years later, he was made permanent. He was made an Appellate Division judge in July 2003.
Justice Amin, who also served as the chairman of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission from 2004 to 2009, is survived by his wife and two sons.
Law Minister Anisul Huq expressed shock at the death of Justice Ruhul Amin. In a condolence message, the Law Minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.
