Dhaka University (DU) unit of Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has formed convening committees in 18 residential halls, but allegations have emerged that nearly two dozen former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists have secured positions within these 593-member committees.
The controversy has prompted leadership to establish a probe committee with a three-day deadline for findings.
The infiltration claims mirror similar issues from November 2024, when JCD's central committee dismissed six DU unit leaders following university committee infiltration allegations. Current accusations suggest the situation has deteriorated significantly, with critics claiming individuals who previously mocked BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia have obtained committee positions.
Several appointees holding senior joint convener positions previously served as secretarial members in BCL committees. Meanwhile, long-standing activists and July movement participants have allegedly been overlooked, according to those denied positions. The committees reportedly favour activists aligned with DU JCD president and general secretary preferences, neglecting those outside their circles.
Nepotism allegations centre around Sir A.F. Rahman Hall, where General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon allegedly appointed his younger brother, Md. Mahdijjaman Jyoti, as member secretary despite having no prior party experience. Shipon defended the selections, saying: "Since September–October last year, those who filled our primary membership forms and remained with us were considered."
President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos acknowledged the concerns: "A probe committee has been formed regarding this issue. Measures will be taken based on committee recommendations." Multiple halls report appointees with documented BCL connections, including photographs with former Awami League ministers and participation in opposition political activities before August's political changes.
Notable infiltrators include Rakibul Hasan Sourav, former vice-president of the Biology Faculty BCL; Zakia Sultana Alo, linked closely to prominent BCL leader Sazia Rahman Silvi; and Roman Mia and Joni Pramanik, both accused of strong ties with BCL politics. Other key names are Md. Mahdijjaman Jyoti, appointed member secretary of Sir A F Rahman Hall and the younger brother of JCD general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, fueling nepotism claims.
Additionally, individuals like Raju Sheikh—known for mocking BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and linked to banned organisations—and members actively involved in BCL’s cultural and political activities have found places in the JCD committees. Photos circulating on social media confirm several committee members’ BCL affiliations, including participation in BCL rallies and election campaigns.
This infiltration highlights the ongoing power struggle and politicization within DU's student organizations, raising questions about the independence and authenticity of JCD’s leadership.
