Joe Root has become the first batter in World Test Championship (WTC) history to reach the 6,000-run milestone.

The landmark came on Day 4 of the decisive Test against India at The Oval, when the veteran English batter struck a boundary off Mohammad Siraj in the 40th over of England’s second innings, taking his score to 28 and crossing 6,000-run mark in WTC cricket.

Earlier in the match, Root had scored 29 runs in the first innings, meaning he needed just 25 more in the second innings to reach the historic milestone. He achieved it with ease and grace, continuing his stellar run in the longest format of the game.

This match marked Root’s 69th appearance in a WTC fixture. With 20 centuries and 22 half-centuries to his name in the competition, Root boasts an impressive average of over 52—setting a high standard for Test batters worldwide. Behind him in WTC run-scoring charts are the likes of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Ben Stokes and Travis Head.

Root has also achieved several other personal milestones in the ongoing series against India. During the Manchester Test, he overtook legends Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run scorer in Test history.

He also equalled Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 38 centuries, becoming the joint-fourth highest century-maker in Tests.

With England trailing 2–1 in the series, Root has become the centerpiece of their batting lineup as they chase a challenging target in the final Test. His form and leadership remain crucial in England’s bid to level the series.
