Two die as boat capsizes in Gazipur beel

Two people including a teenage boy died as a boat carrying them capsized in a beel in Kapasia Upazila of Gazipur District on Friday morning.

The incident took place in the Shapla Beel in Pachua Village under Tok Union of the upazila at around 9 am.

The deceased were identified as Bayezid Hossain, 35, hailed from Mymensingh District, and Mahin, 16, a resident of Sreepur Upazila in Gazipur District.

According to police and Fire Service sources, five people including Bayezid and Mahin went on a boat trip to collect water lilies from the Shapla Beel in Pachua Village under Tok Union of Kapasia Upazila in the morning.

At one stage, the boat carrying them capsized in the water body at around 9 am. All of them fell into the water at that time. Bayezid died on the spot. The other passengers of the boat were rescued and taken to Kapasia Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Mahin dead upon arrival.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

Officer-in-Charge of Kapasia Police Station Md Zainal Abedin Mandal confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.
