The first death anniversary of legendary Bangladeshi rockstar and former Miles frontman Shafin Ahmed was observed on Thursday, marking one year since his passing in Virginia, United States, at the age of 63.

Shafin Ahmed died of cardiac arrest on July 24 last year during the July mass movement and internet blackout, just before a scheduled concert — the second show of his US tour. His body was brought back to Bangladesh and laid to rest at Banani Graveyard on July 30.

Tributes have since poured in across social media from fellow musicians, record labels, and fans at home and abroad, remembering the iconic vocalist and bassist for his contributions to Bangla rock music.

Miles, the band with which Shafin was associated for decades, posted a heartfelt message: “He left behind his magical voice, unique bass grooves and timeless songs, which will live forever in Bangla music.”

His elder brother and bandmate Hamin Ahmed shared: “One of the most iconic music personalities, a true rockstar of Bangladesh, left us on this day... Please pray for Shafin Ahmed.”

Warfaze drummer and band leader Sheikh Monirul Alam Tipu called him “a legend, a warrior, an artist,” while singer Alif Alauddin shared an old performance video and recalled, “You are missed every day.”

Composer Shouquat Ali Imon remembered Shafin’s cheerful presence at his National Award celebration just days before his passing, reflecting on the unpredictability of life.

Record label Gaanchil Music also honoured him with a tribute, describing him as “the voice that touched countless hearts.”

Born on February 14, 1961, in Kolkata to iconic musicians Kamal Dasgupta and Feroza Begum, Shafin Ahmed rose to fame with the band Miles, contributing to every album from 1982’s Miles to 2016’s Proborton. His vocals and bass grooves helped shape hit songs such as Phirye Dao, Dhikhi Dhikhi, Chand Tara, Jala Jala, and Piyashi Mon.

Shafin also enjoyed a successful solo career with albums like Tomakey, Pagla Ghonti, Harano Shukh, and My Love Songs. His song Aj Jonmodin Tomar, produced by Prince Mahmud, remains a staple in birthday celebrations across Bangladesh.

Beyond music, Shafin ventured into politics, joining the National Democratic Movement in 2017 and later the Jatiya Party, even running for mayor in the 2019 Dhaka North City Corporation election.

As tributes continue, Shafin Ahmed remains a beloved figure in the country’s cultural history — remembered not only for his music but for the legacy he left behind in the hearts of generations of fans.
