Justice Tariq to head inquiry panel formed to probe July 16 incidents

The interim government constituted a high-powered six-member inquiry commission to probe the incidents of mass violence, attacks on state institutions including the district jail and the overall deterioration of civil security that occurred on July 16. 

The commission has been established under the authority of Section 3 of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1956.

Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar confirmed the formation of the commission in a statement issued on Thursday.

Former Justice of the Supreme Court and freedom fighter Dr Md Abu Tariq has been appointed Chairman of the commission. 

The commission comprises senior officials and experts from various branches of the state apparatus. Its members include Additional Secretary of the Public Security Division Khandaker Md Mahabubur Rahman, Additional Secretary (Senior District and Sessions Judge) from the Law and Justice Division Md Saiful Islam, Brig Gen Shahidur Rahman Osmani, Additional Inspector General of Police and Director of Central Police Hospital Sardar Nurul Amin and the Chairman of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Dhaka Dr Sajjad Siddiqui.
