Jatiya Nagorik Party's (NCP) Chief Organiser for north religion, Sarjis Alam, on Saturday called for robust political, economic, and cultural resistance against what he termed as “Mujibism,” stating that legal avenues alone are not sufficient to counter its influence.
Speaking at the national rally of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital, Sarjis alleged that the ideology of “Mujibism” remains active across Bangladesh, particularly in regions like Gopalganj.
“We cannot fight Mujibism through legal means alone. It must be broken economically, politically, and culturally,” he declared.
Sarjis challenged the legitimacy of the current constitutional framework, saying, “A Bangladesh-oriented state is not possible under the Mujibist Constitution of 1972. We need a new constitution and fresh elections for a new constituent assembly.”
He also called for the protection of the rights of women and religious minorities, saying a new political structure must be inclusive and just.
Stressing the need for unity among anti-authoritarian forces, he urged all opposition groups to stand together in resisting what he described as “pro-India Mujibist elements.”
“There will be no space for any foreign dominance—be it Indian or otherwise—in this country,” he said.
Referring to the significance of August 5 in opposition politics, Sarjis said, “Last year we had hopes for August 5, but those dreams remain unfulfilled. As the date nears again, we reiterate—we don’t want a so-called civil transitional government. We want a post-uprising government.”
Sarjis made direct attacks on the current Prime Minister, saying, “There must be a trial for the killer Hasina. The verdict must be delivered and implemented. We will not accept a judiciary loyal to any political party.”
While advocating for unity among opposition forces, he emphasized accountability within their own ranks.
“Unity doesn’t mean blind loyalty. If anyone engages in extortion, we will speak out. If someone runs a syndicate, we will oppose it. If anyone engages in land grabbing, we will resist. But when it comes to fighting the Awami League, we will stand united,” he added.
