The body of Sajid Abdullah, a student of Islamic University, was recovered from a pond near Shah Azizur Rahman Hall on the university campus on Thursday evening.

Sajid, a student of the 2021–22 academic session in the Department of Al-Quran and Islamic Studies, was also a resident of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall.

According to campus sources, a group of students noticed Sajid’s body floating in the pond around 6:30pm and promptly alerted the university’s proctorial body.

Police, assisted by university officials and students, quickly arrived at the scene and recovered the body. He was first taken to the Islamic University Central Hospital, where doctors referred him to Kushtia General Hospital. Sajid was declared dead upon arrival.

Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of the Islamic University Police Station, said the body is currently being kept on campus. “We will send the body to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy if the family requests it,” he said, adding that an investigation is underway.

A local shopkeeper, Akmal Hossain, who runs a store near the pond, said he noticed something resembling pants floating in the water around noon but didn’t pay much attention to it.

Sajid’s classmates have urged the university administration to carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
